SANTA MONICA COLLEGE LIBRARY

The Santa Monica College Library modernization is praised for its receptive spaces, subtle introduction of daylight, artful use of materials, and beautifully crafted details. The design doubled its size and reconfigured it as an inviting information center and gathering place. It repaired the earthquake-damaged structure, created a modern and appealing environment for research and study, added a computer commons, expanded seating and book stacks, added new reading and study spaces, and made a problematic main entry on a campus thoroughfare more visible. A three-level computer commons – a separate, acoustically treated interior structure clad in curved walls of oak and glass – provides a strong visual symbol for the information technology within.
