MINGEI MUSEUM

Relocated to a building constructed in the historic style of Balboa Park, the Mingei International Museum of World Folk Art houses seven galleries, theater, library, collection access, research center and educational facilities that address the needs of a highly active, contemporary art museum. Quality of space, exhibition technique and craftsmanship considerations promoted a design incorporating careful control of both natural and artificial light, modulated systems which serve the exhibitions, and materials – such as beech and wood – chosen for their comfort and beauty. Natural light is introduced through skylights above the main staircase of the central rotunda. Select windows are left uncovered to provide light and views of the surrounding park landscape.
