UCSD SHILEY EYE CENTER

The Retina/Glaucoma Center expands Shiley Eye Center’s programs of retina and glaucoma research. It is organized into two pavilions representing the two programs of research; the pavilions share a common lobby. Clinical suites are located on the first level, with research laboratories above that connect to the existing Shiley facility via a pedestrian bridge. A garden is located between the two buildings. A two-story porch unifies the two pavilions along the south façade, creating a large-scale response to a significantly larger building across from the site, while shading glass and screening rooftop mechanical equipment. The porch buffers the first-level programs from Health Sciences Walk and creates pedestrian seating.
