UC San Diego’s Tata Hall for the Sciences recently opened in September 2018. From the early planning stages, the university wanted the new building to focus on “interdigitated” research to capitalize on shared themes of investigation in neurobiology, quantitative biology, and advanced synthetic and organic chemistry. The specific placement of these disciplines and scientific pursuits in the same building would accelerate current collaborative research, while sparking new connections in structural biology, synthetic chemistry, and neuroscience.

The Center for Autonomous Systems and Technologies includes a three-story arena for flying drones and a two-story aerospace robotics flight control lab. The facilities are designed to simulate a variety of environments where robots that fly, drive, walk, crawl or swim can be trained to operate autonomously in variable conditions. One such space is a “black box theater” with a “frictionless” floor that simulates a zero-gravity environment. A large spacecraft fabrication space includes a clean room and a spacecraft motion simulation area.

The Ernest E. Tschannen Science Complex at California State University, Sacramento, will feature a state-of-the-art, energy-efficient, light-filled science facility providing teaching and research laboratories for the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Targeting LEED Gold certification, the new five-story complex will provide indoor and outdoor student collaboration spaces and terraces, as well as teaching and research laboratories, learning studios, classrooms, a rooftop observatory and a 120-seat planetarium.
