2026 CO Architectural Discovery Program
This summer, CO Architects welcomed a new group of high school students to our office for the twelfth annual CO Architectural Discovery Program. Over the course of four weeks, Isabelle, Tamia, Molly and Silvestre were immersed in the design process, exploring architecture through drawing, model making, collaboration and hands-on design challenges. Through this program students had the chance to work alongside architects and designers.
The program began by encouraging the students to observe the world differently. Through freehand sketching, photography and creative exercises, they developed new ways of seeing and interpreting the built environment. Early design challenges introduced them to the iterative nature of architecture. As they worked in teams to transform simple materials into functional objects, the students learned that the strongest ideas often emerge through experimentation and collaboration.

As the program progressed, students built on these foundations by learning architectural drawing conventions, physical model making and the fundamentals of communicating design ideas. The program also included a site visit to one of CO's healthcare projects. During this visit students got a firsthand look at how designs become reality. These skills and activities culminated in the introduction of their final project: designing a pavilion for the LACMA site. Each student developed a unique concept, exploring how architecture can respond to its context while creating meaningful spaces for the community.

A defining part of the program was the weekly pin-ups, where students presented their work to architects, designers, and staff from across the office. These sessions gave students the opportunity to articulate their design process, build confidence in public speaking, receive thoughtful feedback and refine their ideas through constructive critique. By the final presentation, each student produced a complete set of architectural drawings, sketches, and a physical model, while developing the design vocabulary and communication skills needed to clearly present their project and explain the ideas behind their design.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the program was hearing students reflect on their experience during the closing feedback session. Many spoke about feeling welcomed, encouraged, and inspired throughout the program. This was an experience that reflects the collaborative and supportive culture at CO Architects, where asking questions and sharing ideas are encouraged.
The COAD program continues to inspire aspiring architects by providing an introduction to both the design process and the profession itself. By the end of the program, each student left with new skills, greater confidence, and a deeper understanding of what it means to practice architecture. Most importantly, they experienced firsthand the spirit of collaboration that shapes not only great design, but also the culture at CO Architects.
