The University of Texas at Austin Engineering Discovery Building Celebrates Topping Out

After more than a year of construction, The University of Texas at Austin Engineering Discovery Building has officially topped out. The CO Architects team, our partner BGK Architects and members of our consultant team had the privilege of attending the topping out ceremony in Austin and enjoying some BBQ provided by our Vaughn construction team. The ceremony was attended by over 450 trade members, as well as donors and key members of the university team. It was an honor to celebrate this milestone with so many of the people who have made this project possible.

Curious about what it takes to construct a complex building of this size? This project is constructed from:

  • 12,373 cubic yards of concrete (including a high percentage of fly ash to lower our embodied carbon)
  • 1,400 tons of rebar
  • 290 tons of structural steel
  • And so much more...

At 210,000 SF and seven stories, the Engineering Discovery Building relocates and improves existing research and teaching space, providing a new home for the Hildebrand Department of Petroleum & Geosystems and the McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering, while encouraging industry partnerships within the energy sector. It will accommodate a variety of research disciplines, which will be instrumental in attracting prospective students and researchers. This project has reached the topping out milestone, but its journey to becoming the new hub for innovation in engineering is not over yet. Follow along for more updates!
