Exploring CO Architects’ Innovative Use of Environmental Graphics in Architecture

Environmental graphics, often referred to as experiential graphics, encompass a wide range of visual elements within built environments that serve functional, informational, and aesthetic purposes. In this symbiotic relationship, architecture provides the canvas upon which environmental graphics are applied, while environmental graphics, in turn, respond to and complement the architectural context. Through strategic placement and design, environmental graphics can guide navigation, convey information, evoke emotions, and reinforce the intended purpose and character of the building.

At the University of California Riverside School of Medicine Building II, environmental graphics took the form of a captivating mural adorning the main lobby of the building. Stretching across multiple floors next to the staircase, this mural serves as a focal point, enriching the space with its vibrant and intricate design. The mural design was inspired by a deep knowledge and understanding for the region's agricultural heritage, specifically honoring the legacy of navel orange citrus groves that have long flourished in the area.

An abstract portrayal of the citrus trees, complete with their lush fruits and delicate blossoms, was crafted from glass-fiber-reinforced gypsum using a dot pattern technique. The mural aimed to evoke the sensation of wandering through a citrus grove, with the viewer seemingly ascending the tree as they climb the adjacent staircase. Beyond its artistic function, this mural serves a dual purpose: not only does it bring a captivating aesthetic to the lobby, but it also acts as an acoustical element, enhancing the auditory experience within the space.

At LAUSD Polytechnic High School in Sun Valley, California, currently in construction, environmental graphics are being used as a revitalized and contemporary branding element for the new high school.

Recognizing the outdated nature of the old parrot mascot, CO Architects was tasked to modernize the high school's identity. Through strategic placement, the new parrot mascot, along with the school's mantra “Take Flight”, is being integrated into various locations throughout the campus. This deliberate approach aims to inspire students and foster a sense of pride and morale within the school community.

By seamlessly integrating functionality with artistic expression, these environmental graphics not only enhance the human experience, but also supplements the building with vibrant, dynamic environments that inspire, engage and uplift.
