Improving Montana Healthcare Through Nursing Education

Montana State University Mark and Robyn Jones College of Nursing

Five Locations, MT

CO Architects + Cushing Terrell are shaping the future of the Mark and Robyn Jones College of Nursing at Montana State University with five new buildings. Located on all campuses – Bozeman, Billings, Missoula, Great Falls and Kalispell – the projects are anticipated to improve healthcare outcomes in Montana and address a critical shortage of nursing professionals.

The architecture is inspired by Montana's dramatic and diverse landscapes created by the geological processes of carving, eroding, folding and shearing. The buildings take on expressions of clean lines, simplicity, and functionality, allowing for efficient circulation and ease of movement. Consistent across all locations, each building has a layered outer shell that figuratively and literally protects students and faculty.

While the buildings vary in size, they feature similar programs and layouts based on a "Kit of Parts" to support modern nursing education. The internal organization of spaces is carefully considered to create an environment that supports learning, collaboration, and well-being. Flexibility is integrated into the plans, allowing for future adaptability, or even expansion, as educational needs evolve.

The program is comprised of both skills-based and didactic learning environments, including a clinical skills and simulation suite, dual-purpose learning studios, student study and support spaces. Each building also features administrative offices and meeting rooms.
